Caring for your Gemstones & Jewelry
Daily love and wear directly affects the structure and appearance of fine jewelry. Preserving longevity requires intention. Consider the following so your piece can be loved and worn for generations.
Cleaning your Jewelry
What you will need
a dry soft cloth • hot water • dish soap • a soft toothbrush
Cleaning steps
- Fill a bowl with a few drops of dish soap (Dawn is the best) & warm or hot water (not boiling)
- Gently place the item in the bowl of water and set aside for 5-10 minutes
- Gently scrub the piece for a few seconds and soak again. Scrub the stone & all around the setting; don’t press to hard, but give it a good clean.
- Wash the soap off with fresh clean warm water for at least 2 mins.
- Dry with a clean soft cloth
Wear & enjoy the sparkle of your piece
*Do not use an ultrasonic cleaner on GemologyGeek® products.
(Ultrasonic cleaners can loosen. damage and even break stones, in the settings & damage certain settings.)
Be sure to find out if the gemstone or mineral is water-safe, water-sensitive, ultrasonic-sensitive, or should never get wet.
Water-Safe Gemstones & Minerals:
Clean the following gemstones and minerals using mild dish soap, a toothbrush & hot/warm water. Finish with a dry gem cloth:
Amber • Agate • Amethyst • Australian Opals (ONLY) • Chalcedony • Diamond • Fluorite • Garnet • Labradorite • Malachite • Rose Quartz • Jade • Jasper • Sapphire • Spinel • Quartz • Tiger’s Eye • Tourmaline • Topaz • Zircon • Pearls- are all water safe, but they require special cleaners
Water-Sensitive Gemstones:
Clean with a clean dry, or slightly damp, soft cloth. Never soak, always dry completely:
Azurite • Apophyllite • Chalcopyrite • Copper • Desert Rose • Fibrous Malachite • Gypsum • Halite • Hematite • Pyrite • Rainbow Pyrite • Ethiopian Opals- are all water-sensitive gemstones.
Hazardous Chemicals for Gemstones & Minerals:
Ammonia • Alcohol • Alcohol-based products • Acetone • Bleach • Perfume • Toothpaste
